In day to day usage of the word, a stoic is somebody who is (emotionally) unmoved by the things around him.
Stoicism is also the name of a philosophy that can be traced back to a greek named Zeno around 300 BC.
Trying to define stoicism is not easy. As always definitions tend to fluctuate with the person doing the definition. In essence though it seem that most would agree that a stoic tries to keep emotions and interpretations out of his choices of action.
When deciding upon a course of action a stoic tries to eliminate all emotional factors that would affect the decision. His own as well as those of others. He bases his decision only on observable facts.
